David Mahlmann has worked on numerous projects throughout his career including studio features, independent films, television shows, commercials, industrials, and documentaries. He attended Columbia College Chicago where he studied the art of filmmaking and cinematography and further enhanced studies at the Rockport Maine Workshop under the tutelage of renowned Director of Photography Peter James, ASC, ACS.

Biography
With a career that began in lighting, David steadily worked his way into the camera department. After several years as an experienced camera assistant he eventually moved up to full time cameraman. His work experience has enabled him the opportunity to work along side such cinematographers as Peter Biziou, BSC; Bill Butler, ASC; Albert Maysles, ASC; Robert Primes, ASC; and Nancy Schreiber, ASC.
He has operated on such projects as: “Chicago PD”, “Crisis”, “Chicago Fire”, “Betrayal”, “Knight Rider”, "Ghost Whisperer", "Six Feet Under", “Hard Times of RJ Burger”; and the features: "Stolen Summer", ”Look”, and ”Puncture Wounds”. (See IMDb link for more)
David has also photographed a number of film festival award winning projects. The short film “Numb”, on which he was the cinematograher, won best short at the 2011 SOC Awards. That same year David was honored as the recipient of the Emerging Cinematographer Award.
Other various winners include: “Cosmic Solace” (best cinematography), “Written By” (three first prize awards in four nominations), “Rogers Park” (winner and nominee), “La Puerta” (first prize winner), and “Put it Away” (recent festival selection).
David lives in Los Angeles and is active in the production community. He is a member International Cinematographers Guild and has been an active member of the Society of Camera Operators, having recently served on the SOC board of governors as vice president and producer of their 2011 Life Time Achievement Awards show. He is strong supporter of manufacturers that generate the tools and innovations for the advancement of the cinematography craft.
